Founded in Munich in 1980, legendary German band Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle still plays with their original line-up: Justin Hoffmann on keyboards and guitar, Thomas Meinecke on guitars, cornet and drum pads, Michaela Melián on bass and cello, Wilfried Petzi on guitar, mandolin and trombone. Since 1990, drummer Carl Oesterhelt has been the fifth permanent member, replacing the drum machine and the only one in the line-up who doesn’t also sing. From the beginning, the band saw itself in the tradition of art school bands: not virtuosity, but attitude plays the central role. F.S.K. make music about music. Their output is difficult to define, though always very much their own as they moved through post-punk, folk, the abstraction of post-rock and electronic music, etc. Performances by Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle are rare. They offer a glimpse into a unique definition of musical aesthetics.
