Marruska Ensemble

(ES)

Friday
18:00

The Spanish Marruska Ensemble arose in the wake of the F(r)icciones release by A. Maiah, Arruska member Asier Pérez Basterra, fulfilling a need to materialize a series of live compositions in which canonical musical genres are contrasted with sonic elements that exert a subtle friction, aiming to generate a certain feeling of discomfort in the listener. The Marruska Ensemble questions cultural appropriation by subverting field recordings and exposing them as theft through a loop of cultural coupling.

Asier Pérez Basterra is a guitarist involved in the Basque scene since the late 90s, both as a musician and as an independent promoter and publisher. He has been part of various post-punk and noise-rock groups for more than two decades. His solo work utilizes layers of industrial noise, conjuring up idiomatic compositions for electric guitar, through strict improvisation with prepared guitar and electro-acoustic music based on sampling field recordings. Accordionist Garazi Navas has participated in a multitude of projects performing contemporary, classical, traditional and other styles of music. She regularly collaborates with artists from the fields of  dance, poetry, theater or artistic installations, soundtracks and free improvisation. Pianist Adrián Royo has played extensively in the Asturian music scene, formed his own contemporary jazz RPM Trío, and is active as a producer and bandleader. Clarinettist and percussionist Andoni Penela has an interest in jazz and other types of music outside of academia. Next to clarinet and percussion, he plays saxophone and synthesizers in a variety of bands.
