Over the past few years, Melbourne-based label A Colourful Storm has established itself as one of the most unique and forward-thinking labels in the world. The brains behind it is Moopie: specialist DJ, restless label boss, radio resident and singular voice within contemporary electronic music.
Beijing-born, Melbourne-based Moopie – real name Matthew Xue – started turning heads in the mid-2010s with DJ sets impressing the likes of Donato Dozzy and Silent Servant on their respective Australian tours (the latter handpicking him to contribute a mix for James Ruskin’s Jealous God release). Developing his sound and playing at festivals (Berlin Atonal, Meredith, Inner Varnika) and clubs (Berghain Kantine, Tresor, Globus) along the way, he established A Colourful Storm as an imprint in 2016 as a platform for new and emerging artists and to give new life to forgotten classics.
As a DJ, Moopie is daring and eclectic, connecting strands from far corners of electronic music history and pushing them forward alongside contemporary and unreleased cuts: an open-minded approach which can be heard in his Rinse FM residency, Dommune appearances, recordings for cult labels like The Trilogy Tapes and dancefloors around the world. His vision as a DJ is inextricably linked to the development of his label, which was the first to champion breakout artist Mark (aka Klon Dump) while introducing Christoph de Babalon to a new generation of fans. And who else is brave enough to release lost indie-pop holy grails alongside contemporary four-to-the-floor cuts, industrial-leaning experimentalism and drum’n’bass abstractions?
Moopie’s far-reaching DJ sets embody a relentless seeking of music new and old. Backed by his label curated with extraordinary vision, he stands out as a unique force within the contemporary electronic music landscape.
