Akuma no Numa—meaning “devil’s swamp” in Japanese, and originally used as the localized title for Tobe Hooper’s Eaten Alive upon its release in Japan—is a DJ trio consisting of Compuma, Dr. Nishimura, and Awano. Beyond their activities as individual DJs, all three are deeply embedded within Japan’s music ecosystem: Compuma and Dr. Nishimura are renowned record buyers with longstanding roots in the country’s underground electronic scene, while Awano has extensive experience in the field of radio production. Known for their immersive, slow-tempo, deeply underground sets, the trio crafts dense, psychedelic grooves that often begin at lower BPMs, gradually building a moody atmosphere geared toward musical and synesthetic hypnosis. Performing in a back-to-back style using CDJs, turntables, and a mixer, they fluidly weave together their vast knowledge of electronic music, house, techno, new age, breakbeats, industrial, acid, electro, disco, and sounds discovered from around the world into a uniquely uncompromising and left-field sonic trip they describe simply as “Numa” — a swamp. With all due respect to Eaten Alive, Akuma no Numa masterfully transforms any dance floor into a sonic swamp.
