Inspired by the animated computer graphics on VHS tapes she first encountered at the Fuse in Brussels in 1994, spo0ky transitioned from studying mural painting to graphic design. Her design portfolio includes album covers, posters, and music videos for labels such as Pioneer Unit (Cape Town), Jarring Effects (Lyon), and IOT Records (Marseille).
As a VJ, spoOky has been a full member of the bands DOOKOOM, A$CII DAGGER, PURE SOLID, 4DLS (with Ben Sharpa) and Cape Town Effects, conceptualizing and creating immersive live visual experiences that underpinned the live shows. She has also VJed at numerous events and festivals in South Africa, with a visual style that blends digital geometric glitches with filmed material, always synchronized with the music like a lighting technician.
In addition to her VJ work, spo0ky experiments with painting, creating rows of repetitive lines on various supports. This work, reminiscent of Neil Toroni’s approach, allows for the dynamic interaction of paintbrush, paint, water and support, resulting in a consistent yet unique body of work. It’s impossible to paint the same line twice.
For her VJ set at Meakusma, spo0ky will merge her specialties, combining painted repetitive lines, glitched-out graphics, and atmospheric cinematographic visuals to echo and enhance the auditory experience, creating a mesmerizing visual journey that resonates with the music.
