BRUINE is a project between concert and sound installation, created in 2023 in France by French accordionist Emilie Skrijelj, German jazz clarinetist and alto saxophonist Michael Thieke, and Belgian musician, drummer, and improviser Tom Malmendier. The subtle interplay of their materials reveals an abstract, minimalist landscape in electroacoustic colors.

BRUINE is a question of extending instruments using several loudspeakers of different natures, chosen and manufactured to color, alter, and filter the instruments. Each instrument is connected to several loudspeakers placed on objects on the floor, offering different, distinct listening points that disturb the acoustically amplified relationship according to the listener’s disposition, causing effects of multiphony, fragmentation, and saturation. Diffusers as well as musicians will have to be mobile to inhabit the space in its volume and its different planes.
BRUINE means drizzle, which is a type of precipitation whose fine droplets almost seem to float in the air as their movement is slow. Sound here becomes a palpable and manipulable material. BRUINE offers the listener a sensitive space where listening remains active and meticulous, and where sound becomes visual.
