Marcus Schmickler & Z-Ensemble

(A-Musik, Editions Mego - DE)

Sunday
20:00

Composer of contemporary and electronic music Marcus Schmickler works at the interface of computer music and ensemble composition, performance and science. Whether as an improviser, sound sculptor or representative of computer music in a club context – he is one of the avant-garde protagonists of today and is a figurehead of the Cologne music scene. In 1995, Schmickler and friends initiated a-Musik, a unique combination of record store, sales and label for experimental music. Also in the mid-90s, he started the post-rock solo project Pluramon, with which he emphasized his cross-genre aspirations as a musician early on. His works refer equally to the tradition of electronic music from Germany, French spectral music, American experimental and noise music.

Schmickler composed Glockenbuch for the Ambient Festival in Cologne in 2021. An immersive and multi-modal piece, Glockenbuch is a musical experience unlike any other. Its integration of conceptual ideas, leaving room for musicological and social commentary, combined with Schmickler’s detailed compositional and performance skills and ideas, make it a vital work far beyond a common concert experience. Glockenbuch has only been performed a few times, including at the Biennale in Venice in 2023. A saxophone septet featuring a.o. saxophonist, composer, electronic musician and curator from Spain, based in Zurich, Joan Jordi Oliver will join in the performance. Schmickler will also perform a 20-minute 8-channel solo piece.
